what a wonderful story! I haven't read the rest yet but I can tell it's excellent! I love secretly romantic!Klaus, and you have him spot on here. 

A question: I don't understand what a vase of Aloe is for--or what it is exactly for that matter. Is this some sort of national custom? I am assuming you are American from your spelling and usage ('gotten') but of course I may be wrong. Just curious!

You're right, I live in America.  Around where I grew up, people were always given aloe plants at funerals and kept them in memory of the deceased.  I hadn't thought to question how widespread the custom was.  In the story, I just used it as a gesture of sympathy.  No deeper meaning than that.  Sorry, I probably should have elaborated a little more.
